- If the engine won't start even though there's fuel in the chainsaw, the carburetor could be the problem. Sometimes, it's easier to replace the carburetor than to clean it and rebuild it. Follow these steps to do the job yourself in about half an hour.
The chainsaw engine needs gas, compression and spark in order to start. First, make sure there's fresh gas in the tank-old gas accumulates water and burns poorly. Replace the fuel if it's old. Add fuel stabilizer to the gas when you refill the tank to help keep the fuel fresh. Being an owner of 3 old chainsaw, I know a thing or two about how to start an old gas chainsaw without much trouble. These are the exact methods I used to start 20-year old my dad's Stihl chainsaw (after he passed away). I also used the same method on a friend's Mcculloch 250 chainsaw(it came out of storage).
If your Chainsaw won’t start, there are common problems that you can check and troubleshooting steps that you can try before taking your chainsaw for servicing.
While doing the following troubleshooting steps, it is best to practice caution. The chainsaw might start suddenly while you’re checking it. Hold it as if you expect it to start any moment.

Is there a spark?
Check is if there is a spark. The spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture and initiates combustion. Remove the spark plug, connect it to a plug wire, and let it touch the metal part of the saw. Watch the electrode on the plug and see if there is a spark. Wear and tear will cause the spark plug to corrode. If there is no spark, brush the spark plug lightly with a steel brush to clean it. If cleaning it doesn’t solve the issue, replace the spark plugs with new ones. If you’ve replaced it with new ones, you may need to replace the ignition coil.
Is there fuel in the tank?
If you haven’t used your chainsaw for a while, the fuel may have gotten bad. After 8 weeks, the volatile components of the fuel would have evaporated – and it won’t ignite. Drain your tank and put in fresh fuel.
Is the fuel mixture correct?
Two stroke engines like the one on your chainsaw require a mixture of gasoline and oil. For almost all engines of this type, a 50-1 mixture is recommended. That’s 2 1/2 ounces of oil for every gallon of gas. Make sure you are using two-cycle oil. To make sure the mixture is correct, drain the oil from your engine. Mix the gas and oil in a fuel can and shake it well. Put the fresh fuel in your gas tank.
Engine may be flooded
When you try to start your chainsaw and you smell fuel, your engine may be flooded. Remove the spark plug and check for moisture. If you see moisture there is too much fuel on the engine. Drain the fuel through the spark plug hole and put in a fresh spark plug.

Is the air filter dirty?
Check the air filters on your chainsaw. Most starting issues are caused by dirty air filters. If it is clogged, it will draw too much gas in comparison to the amount of air – as if the choke is always on – or it will block the flow of fuel. Clean the air filter regularly.
If you have electric chainsaw – check If the switch in the ON position?
This may sound like a stupid question but it should be the first thing you should check. Your chainsaw should be switched on and the switch should be staying in the ON position. If there is no continuity, replace the switch.

If you’ve checked all of the above and your chainsaw still won’t start, there might be a problem with the Carburetor. Unless you’re an experienced mechanic, it might be best to just bring it to a service center, especially if it’s still under warranty.
